Gen tumbled in through the secret passageway door in her bedroom with just enough time to quickly change out of the staff uniform. She was finishing the knot on the fussy silk bow of her blouse right as Professor Règles knocked on the Princess Suite’s front door.

“Good morning, Your—” Professor Règles did a double take. “Your hair...”

Oops. Gen darted a look at the mirror on the wall. Her ponytail must’ve gotten messed up when she threw off the uniform, and there were some muffin crumbs in the hair that framed her face. She swiped them off and watched as Professor Règles’s disapproving gaze followed the crumbs onto the plush carpet.

Double oops.

Professor Règles let out a long, woe-is-me sigh. “Your Highness, the coronation is in three weeks. Can’t you at least try?”

Unfortunately, Gen’s New York City philosophy of “if you act like you belong somewhere, people won’t question you” didn’t seem to be working here in Raldonia, and certainly not in the palace. Or maybe the problem was that Gen didn’t feel like she belonged here, which made it a lot harder to act like she did.

“I am trying,” Gen insisted as she tugged her hair tie loose and redid her ponytail low on the nape of her neck.

Professor Règles sighed again, but her job was to get Gen into tip-top shape no matter what, so she rubbed her temples just once, smoothing away the stress on her face, then stood straight as a steel rod again.

“We shall pick up where we left off yesterday. Royal elocution.” She elongated all the vowels to emphasize them, as if Gen couldn’t hear them otherwise.

Gen closed her eyes, trying to remember the sentences Professor Règles had made her memorize yesterday. But all she could think about were the questions that had popped up from her excursion out of the palace: How did Jonah the fishmonger’s comments and Anita the farmer’s accusations fit into the case? Who was behind the fish incident? Had the fish really been messed with to make it look like the Curse of the Tainted Throne was real? And if so, what was the motive?

“Welcome to, uh, Raldonia. I’m glad—I’m pleased—to, er, that you could come to...”

“Where is your mind today, Your Highness?” the pro-fessor asked.

Gen’s eyes popped back open. “Sorry, I just got a little distracted.” The understatement of the year. If only Gen could work on Hopper so the AI could help her investigate. But there had been so little time to tinker on her program, especially since Gen didn’t have a mobile device and had to code while sitting at an actual computer.

Professor Règles clucked her tongue. “You must focus! There is nothing more important than your upcoming coronation.”

I know! Gen wanted to shout. That’s why she needed to solve this mystery, because if the curse rumors got too out of hand and more citizens like Anita blamed Gen, then there wouldn’t be a coronation.

But one look at the stern, bespectacled professor, and Gen knew she wouldn’t be a sympathetic ear.
