Gen tumbled in through the secret passageway door in her bedroom with just enough time to quickly change out of the staff uniform. She was finishing the knot on the fussy silk bow of her blouse right as Professor Règles knocked on the Princess Suiteâs front door.
âGood morning, Yourââ Professor Règles did a double take. âYour hair...â
Oops. Gen darted a look at the mirror on the wall. Her ponytail mustâve gotten messed up when she threw off the uniform, and there were some muffin crumbs in the hair that framed her face. She swiped them off and watched as Professor Règlesâs disapproving gaze followed the crumbs onto the plush carpet.
Double oops.
Professor Règles let out a long, woe-is-me sigh. âYour Highness, the coronation is in three weeks. Canât you at least try?â
Unfortunately, Genâs New York City philosophy of âif you act like you belong somewhere, people wonât question youâ didnât seem to be working here in Raldonia, and certainly not in the palace. Or maybe the problem was that Gen didnât feel like she belonged here, which made it a lot harder to act like she did.
âI am trying,â Gen insisted as she tugged her hair tie loose and redid her ponytail low on the nape of her neck.
Professor Règles sighed again, but her job was to get Gen into tip-top shape no matter what, so she rubbed her temples just once, smoothing away the stress on her face, then stood straight as a steel rod again.
âWe shall pick up where we left off yesterday. Royal elocution.â She elongated all the vowels to emphasize them, as if Gen couldnât hear them otherwise.
Gen closed her eyes, trying to remember the sentences Professor Règles had made her memorize yesterday. But all she could think about were the questions that had popped up from her excursion out of the palace: How did Jonah the fishmongerâs comments and Anita the farmerâs accusations fit into the case? Who was behind the fish incident? Had the fish really been messed with to make it look like the Curse of the Tainted Throne was real? And if so, what was the motive?
âWelcome to, uh, Raldonia. Iâm gladâIâm pleasedâto, er, that you could come to...â
âWhere is your mind today, Your Highness?â the pro-fessor asked.
Genâs eyes popped back open. âSorry, I just got a little distracted.â The understatement of the year. If only Gen could work on Hopper so the AI could help her investigate. But there had been so little time to tinker on her program, especially since Gen didnât have a mobile device and had to code while sitting at an actual computer.
Professor Règles clucked her tongue. âYou must focus! There is nothing more important than your upcoming coronation.â
I know! Gen wanted to shout. Thatâs why she needed to solve this mystery, because if the curse rumors got too out of hand and more citizens like Anita blamed Gen, then there wouldnât be a coronation.
But one look at the stern, bespectacled professor, and Gen knew she wouldnât be a sympathetic ear.
